Kicking Off the Open Source Advent
“I want to get into open source, but I don’t know how.”
Does this sound familiar to you? Have you been wanting to get more involved with open-source software, but no one’s given you an entry point?
That was me up until just recently. That’s a big reason why I’ve pushed the team at Zilliz and 24 other teams to collaborate on this upcoming project, our version of the Open Source Advent!
How can you get more into open source?
For the first 25 days of December 2023, we will feature one open-source project on our social media page. Along with each project, we will offer at least one tutorial you can do in under 30 minutes so you can quickly get started with that project.
To make things a bit more fun and festive we’ve also made this into a game. Here’s how to play the Open Source Advent game.
Some game rules to encourage you to have fun with your open source journey
You will get one point for:
Starring the featured project’s GitHub repo
Creating a repo using the project and putting it on GitHub
Making a post and tagging the featured project’s company page on X or LinkedIn
- One additional point for tagging a friend (up to 3 friends)
To encourage you to get even more involved, we’ve also added things you can do to get three points:
Writing a PR that gets merged (+3)
Writing a blog about their experience with this program (+3)
The top three scorers will get:
A swag pack for Milvus (from Zilliz) including:
- A hoodie
- A shirt
- A pair of socks
- Stickers
A shoutout from Zilliz (and me!) on social media
A swag pack from partners who have swag to send!
What’s the game plan?
Each day of the Open Source Advent, we will release:
An announcement of the featured project with a description and link to its GitHub
A quick get-started guide
A list of GitHub issues for you to possibly get started with
Links for you to get more involved with the project if you’d like
How do you participate?
Join the Open Source Advent Discord Channel
Make sure you have a GitHub account and an IDE
Be ready to follow some code tutorials
Submissions will open on the Discord Channel as of December 26th, 2023, and end on January 2nd, 2024. Winners will be announced on January 8th, 2024.
What happens if there’s a tie?
If there are more than three people with the same score, we’ll use a fun tie-breaker — if you have a repo that uses more than one project, you will get a +0.5 multiplier for each project. For example, you will get 1.5 points for each project that uses 2 of the featured open source projects and 2 points for each project you make that uses 3 of the featured open source projects.
If there are STILL ties beyond that, we’ll have a code-off, where you will have an additional week to create more projects to earn more points!
