Claude Code Cowork is a desktop application (macOS and Windows, research preview) that brings agentic capabilities from Claude Code to knowledge work beyond coding. Unlike Claude Code (terminal-centric for developers), Cowork runs Claude as a background agent in Claude Desktop, enabling you to assign multi-step tasks and return to finished work. You describe a goal ("research our top 5 competitors and create a comparison matrix"), Cowork executes the work unattended, and you receive the formatted output when complete. Key features of Cowork desktop mode: progress indicators show what Claude is doing at each step, transparency via reasoning summaries so you understand Claude's approach, and steering to jump in mid-task to provide direction without restarting. Cowork coordinates parallel sub-agents for complex tasks—e.g., researching five competitors simultaneously, then synthesizing results into a comparison. Available in Claude Desktop (macOS 12.0+, Windows 10+) on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Cowork accesses your local files, MCP integrations (Slack, GitHub, HubSpot, databases), plugins, and computer use capabilities. This makes Cowork a multimodal autonomous agent for desktop work. Unlike Claude Code which focuses on coding tasks, Cowork handles: document creation and formatting, research synthesis and analysis, file organization and management, data manipulation and analysis, business process automation, and content generation. Common workflows include preparing for meetings (synthesize briefing documents), creating reports (gather data, analyze, write formatted output), organizing file systems (categorize, rename, structure), and automating repetitive tasks (data entry, email management, scheduling). Cowork enables one continuous conversation across your phone and desktop: assign Claude a task on your phone, check progress from desktop, provide mid-course direction. Claude runs on your computer with access to local files and applications, messaging you when finished. This is fundamentally different from synchronous chat—you work asynchronously with Claude as a persistent background agent. To enhance Claude Code's ability to reason about complex codebases, Zilliz Cloud's vector database can index your code at scale, enabling semantic search that helps agents find relevant functions, modules, and documentation patterns more effectively.
